Each chapter provides discussion of etiology, pathology, pathophysiology, and surgical anatomy, providing the necessary background for diagnostic evaluation, surgical treatment as well as nonsurgical treatment, including chemotherapy and radiation. Additional chapters cover such important topics as care for the pediatric patient, radiotherapy, restoration secondary to tumor ablation, and speech, voice, and swallowing implications following ablative procedures. Features: Detailed descriptions that guide the clinician through each surgical procedure Comprehensive discussion of management strategies that provides clinicians with a solid understanding of the available treatments and the possibilities and limitations of each Nearly 1,000 high-quality illustrations, photographs, and radiographic images that demonstrate pathologic and surgical concepts in precise detail Coverage of the latest techniques in skull base surgery and laryngeal surgery Valuable discussion of nursing care, nutrition, and speech therapy An essential resource for optimizing the care of patients with advanced cancer, this book is ideal for clinicians and residents in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, oncology, and general surgery.

Book Description
Imaging is crucial in the multidisciplinary approach to head and neck cancer management. The rapid technological development of recent years makes it necessary for all members of the multidisciplinary team to understand the potential applications, limitations, and advantages of existing and evolving imaging technologies. It is equally important that the radiologist has sufficient clinical background knowledge to understand the clinical significance of imaging findings. This book provides an overview of the findings obtained using different imaging techniques during the evaluation of head and neck neoplasms, both before and after therapy. All anatomic areas in the head and neck are covered, and the impact of imaging on patient management is discussed in detail. The authors are recognized experts in the field, and numerous high-quality images are included. This second edition provides information on the latest imaging developments in this area, including the application of PET-CT and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging.

Succesful Regional Anaesthesia and Surgical Gastrostomy for Head and Neck Cancer patients with Airway Obstruction D. Vuckova; T. Gramosli; M. Gjorgon; D. Popevski; E. Stoicovski; Z. MitrevZan Mitrev Clinic Background and Aims: Malnutrition and cachexia are frequent in Head and Neck Cancers (HNC) patients. These complications occur as a result of the cancer but worsened by surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy that further challenge oral intake but also airway obstruction.Case report: We present case of 82-year-old male with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, severe malnutrition following multimodality therapy and difficult airway. He was unable to consume solid foods and liquids, developing severe cachexia due to esophageal stricture, confirmed during an unsuccessful gastroscopy. Refused by several hospitals, we opted for surgical gastrostomy under regional anesthesia, using epidural catheter placed T10/T11 and continuous 5% bupivacaine. The procedure was uneventful and pain free. The epidural catheter was removed on the 2nd postoperative day; patient discharged on the 4th postop day, with functional gastrostomy. First follow up showed increase in body weight. Conclusions: Regional anesthesia and surgical gastrostomy can be successfully performed in a frail geriatric patient when the underlying disease cause severe airway obstructionReferences: 1.tSiegel R, Naishadham D, Jemal A. Book Description
Predicting survival and other outcomes is increasingly being recognized as an important skill for palliative care doctors and nurses, oncologists, and other healthcare professionals who treat patients with advanced cancer. Accurate prognosis is essential if we are to offer quality of care and 'a good death', as well as to aid decision-making. There is much prognostic information available that is scattered throughout the palliative care and oncological literature but this is the first time it has been gathered systematically in one place. Glare and Christakis, leaders in the field of prognosis, bring together a team of international contributors from across the fields of palliative care and oncology. This comprehensive but practical guide begins with the principles of prognostication, including formulating the prediction and then communicating it. Topics such as statistical issues, evidence-based medicine, and the ethics of prognostication are also covered. The second section addresses prognostication in 15 specific cancer sites once they have reached the advanced stage, following a standard template for consistency and easy access to the key information. The third section deals with prognostication in patients with a variety of common clinical conditions at the end of life, such as bowel obstruction, hypercalcaemia, and brain metastases. In addition, survival curves are provided within each chapter, palliative care conditions are examined for the first time, and a summary table of long and short term prognosis ensures this book remains practical.
